Baby Mac works with two windows- a Design window (for designing blocks and quilts) and a Library Window to keep blocks currently being used in the design process. The basic idea is to combine groups of blocks to create secondary designs. You can very quickly work with the two blocks on the Design screen to see combinations of one or two blocks in a quilt. There are many ways you can manipulate the blocks. The tools and menu items are described below and there is a short tutorial at the end of this file. (not included in demo version)
Tool Bar
Grid Tool- when you click on this tool a dialog box will appear asking you for the grid type you want to use and if you want the grid to show. At this time Baby Mac supports 3, 4, 5 , 6 and 8 patch grid types. Clicking this tool will create a block which we will call Block #1. The next time you click this tool you will create a block below the first- Block #2. These are the blocks you can combine to make quilts.
Line Tool- this is the tool you use to draw lines on your grid or in the borders of your quilt. The lines will snap to the grid you have chosen. You can erase the last line you drew by using the Undo command in the Edit Menu.
Painting Tool- same as paint tool in paint programs. Use to fill areas of your block or border. Choose colors from the RGB Menu and patterns from the Pattern Menu
Eyedropper tool- Use this tool to pick up a color on the screen. The current paint color will change to whatever color you click on and then you can use that color to paint with.
Arrow tool- flips the left corner of whichever block you were last drawing or painting in. It will also flip the quilt if you are working in the quilt or border area.
Purple Quilt- Creates a quilt by repeating Block #1 twenty five times (5 across X 5 down)
Alternating Block Quilt (purple and red)- Creates a quilt using Block #1 alternated with Block #2. If there is no second block, the first will alternate with a blank block.
Red quilt - Creates a quilt using Block #2
"B"order Tool- If you draw in the left top corner of your quilt (around the left side and top of the first block in the quilt), you can click the “B” and the drawing or painting will expand around the quilt.
On-Point Tool-takes Block #1 and draws it on-point .
Hand Tool-this tool allows you to go to the Library and choose any block you wish and place it on the quilt or in the Block #1 or Block#2 position. When you click on this tool you will go the library window to choose a block. When you return to Window #1 you can place the library block (the hand cursor will appear) wherever you click the mouse.
Menus:
File menu:
Open Blocks..(‚åò-O) -loads blocks If there is no block on the design Window, the first block you open will appear as Block #1. Make sure you are loading from your Library of Blocks. If you want to bring in a block or quilt from another program you need to cut and paste it in.. See Edit Menu below.
Open Quilts... loads quilts.
Open Border - loads and expands a border onto your quilt. This will erase any border currently drawn.
Save Block-(‚åò-S) allows you to save your block to disk. If you have 2 blocks on the Design Window, it will prompt you for which block to save. All files are saved in PICT format so they can be easily recognized and used in other programs.
Save Quilt- will save the whole quilt including border. Again this is a PICT format so it will be recognizable to other programs.
Save Border- will save the left top portion of border. When you load the border, it will automatically be expanded around the quilt.
Page Setup-printer page setup
Print Block-will print block. You can choose the size of the block in the dialog box that comes up. The block will print from 1 to 8 inches in size. Baby Mac does not print individual templates but the blocks could be cut up and used as such or as an aid in drafting your own templates..
Print Quilt-(‚åò-P) prints your whole quilt design on a full page. If you do not wish the name to print underneath, delete it before printing.
Print Library- will print current library of blocks (up to 24 blocks) and their names. You can choose either vertical or horizontal layout in Page Setup.
Edit menu:
Undo-will undo last draw or paint.( See Eraser Line below if you need to erase more than one line.)
Copy-will copy Block#1 to the Clipboard for pasting in another program.
Paste - pastes Clipboard item into Block #1 position.
I have disabled “Cut” because it has no purpose in the program.
Clear Quilt - erases whole quilt including borders.
Clear Borders-erases all drawing in the border area.
Clear Library-will erase ALL the blocks on your library screen. This is handy when you are done designing with a group of blocks and would like to start fresh without replacing the blocks one at a time.
More Tools Menu:
Eraser Line- Draws a line that erases the line underneath it. This may leave some little holes depending on where you use it. Undo is a cleaner way of doing things but sometimes you need this to erase more than one line..
Horizontal Flip-will flip Block #1 horizontally into the Block #2 space. You will be prompted to either move or erase Block #2.
Vertical Flip- will flip Block #1 vertically into Block #2 space.
4 Block Flip- like the Arrow Tool but will take Block #1 and flip the whole block in the quilt area,creating four blocks.
Rotate the Corner-same as the Flip Tool on the tool bar except that it takes the left corner of the block and does a 90 degree rotation each time.
Rotate Block-rotates Block #1 into Block #2 space.
4 Block Rotate -same as 4 Block Flip only rotating the block in the Quilt area.
Lattice Quilt-will make a quilt of either one of your blocks with stripping in between. After you create a lattice quilt the Hand Tool conform to that grid for placing individual blocks on the quilt.
Change grid- You may need to change to different grids when drawing on different type blocks. You will get the same dialog as when you create a block but the program will just note the new grid type and not draw a whole new block.
Sound -(‚åò-E) There are a few sounds in Baby Mac for fun but if they are bugging you , here is whare you can turn them off.
Block menu:
Get Block from Quilt-(⌘-G)This allows you to “grab” a block from a quilt. You will have a lasso cursor. Click on a block and the cursor will change to your hand cursor. (see hand tool above). Now you can place the block elsewhere in the quilt or in one of the block positions
Copy Block to Library-(‚åò-M)allows you to move either Block #1 or Block #2 to Library window for use later on. This clears the area for designing blocks.
Window menu- toggles between Design and Library Windows.(‚åòD-‚åòA). When you are in the Library of blocks all menus are disabled except for the Window Menu and Open Blocks, Print Library and Clear Library.
Pattern Menu- patterns currently available for painting. If you paint a pattern over an area of another color, the color will remain as a background color. Once you paint with a pattern, you cannot paint over that area again.
RGB Color Menu-your palette of colors. The color and pattern you have chosen will be indicated at the bottom of the tool bar.
